Modified use of a high-pull headgear appliance for the treatment of anterior open bite malocclusion : A case report

A patient having a dentoalveolar anterior open bite malocclusion due to a digit sucking habit undertook orthodontic treatment. The treatment was commenced with a palatal crib, and a high-pull headgear appliance was later used before and during the application of the edgewise appliance. The lip bumper effect of the inner bow of the headgear contributed to improving the upper intercanine width. The intrusive force of the headgear to the upper molar teeth together with the extrusive force delivered by the elastics hooked between the anterior parts of the inner bow and the upper archwire prevented the upper molars from being extruded during leveling of the upper teeth.
