Mandibular movements during chewing of a standardized test food show reproducible patterns in subjects with reasonably good occlusion. In this case report, long-term postoperative changes in spatial and temporal variabilities in mandibular incisor-point movement during deliberate unilateral gum chewing were investigated. The patient's trajectory of a chewing cycle showed two-dimensionality (planarity) with reasonable accuracy at pre- and post-treatment stages. Significant reduction of the variability in orientation angle of the best-fit plane and in curvature of the chewing cycle as well as stabilization of the chewing rhythm were observed seven years after orthognathic surgery. The postoperative stabilization of jaw movement kinematics suggests that the greater spatial and temporal variability of jaw movements noted at pre-treatment may be associated with unstable occlusal condition.
