At present, the National Dental Board Examination (National Board) of Japan is based on a multiple choice type questions. The importance of this examination is not only to pass, but also the passing rate is considered to be one of the criteria to evaluate the quality of the Universities. However, there has been no effort to help students for the National Board in most of the dental Universities. Furthermore, there has been no report that has quantitatively assessed the effect of the orthodontic lectures or seminars for educational purpose. Therefore, we have evaluated the effect of the 90-minute orthodontic preparation seminar for the National Board. First of all, we had analyzed the past National Board questions in detail, and find out a solution of the problem, and made a textbook that was used in the seminar. We lectured the solution for the problem using slides, and instructed to solve the questions right after the lecture and repeated this process. Then, we have statistically compared the pre- and post-examination that was considered to be identical difficulty and similar question. In order to eliminate the influence of the examination, we have used two different examinations randomly for pre- or post-examination. As a result, after the seminar, the scores of the students were significantly increased which was more than 10%. Therefore, we concluded that even a single preparation seminar has a significant effect for the undergraduate students.
