A comparative study of frictional resistance and surface roughness between orthodontic bracket and arch wire

The frictional resistance between an orthodontic bracket and arch wire is closely related to the efficiency of tooth movement in sliding mechanics. Frictional resistance may arise from the materials, geometrical configuration between the orthodontic bracket and arch wire, ligation system and its force, wire stiffness, direction and degree of orthodontic force, and surface roughness of bracket and wire. This study examined the relationship between the frictional resistance and surface roughness of an orthodontic bracket and arch wire. Monocrystalline and polycrystalline ceramic brackets and nickel-titanium alloy, beta-titanium alloy, cobalt-chrome alloy, and stainless steel wires were chosen for this study. A confocal optical microscope was used to evaluate the surface roughness (Ra) of the brackets and the wires. Frictional resistance between the brackets and the wires was tested by a universal testing machine with the same amount of mechanical load on the wire as ligating pressure. The surface roughness of polycrystalline ceramic brackets and beta-titanium alloy wire of both the edgewise and flatwise parts was highest during three tests. The results of the frictional resistance test showed that the combination of polycrystalline ceramic bracket and beta-titanium alloy wire produced the greatest value among the three tests. Therefore, the combination of a rough surface bracket and wire may produce higher frictional resistance. The results show that in order to achieve efficient sliding mechanics, it is important to choose brackets and wires that have as low surface roughness as possible.
