A comparison of the different bracket slots for surface roughness using a confocal optical microscope

The purpose of this study was to clarify the surface roughness of 29 brands of different bracket slots from 10 manufacturers using a confocal optical microscope. The following results were obtained ; (1) Among the Ra values on the surface of bracket slots (29 variations), the smallest one was determined in a metal bracket (0.256 μm) while the largest value was obtained with a ceramic bracket (4.453 μm). (2) There were great differences registered in Ra among the products, although the same materials were used in the bracket slots. (3) The same Ra was rarely recognized for the basal and lateral faces of bracket slot surfaces. (4) Almost the same Ra values were observed between the same products for maxillary central incisor and maxillary canine of brackets. (5) There were irregularities (S. D.) between products, even with the same lot number. The largest difference was 1.064 μm and the smallest one was 0.039 μm. As a result of our findings, we consider that the materials, manufacturing methods, and whether or not a surface had been worked brought about such differences.
