Modulation of Microwave Transmission by Acoustoelectric Domains in CdS

The transmission modulation of X-band microwave radiation caused by acoustoelectric domains is studied in semiconducting CdS single crystal at room temperature. A strong correlation between the modulation signal and the dc electric field in the domain is found with respect to the dependence on the applied field; the modulation signal as well as the dc field in the domain are inclined to saturate with an increase in the applied field. This is inconsistent with the experimental results of the transmission of light with the wave length near the fundamental absorption edge of the crystal. This fact shows that the microwave modulation is not directly attributed to the acoustic phonon flux in the domain, but associated with the high electrical resistivity accompanying the domain. Futhermore, not only a strong decrease in the conductivity but also a slight increase in the dielectric constant are observed in the region of acoustic flux domain by using the microwave bridge technique.
