Stabilometry in Epidemiologieal Use : Measurement Bias by Different Instructions

Computerized stabilometry has been developed to assess equilibrium disturbance. It records body sway with pressure sensors set at the vertex of regular triangle plate. Because it is a simple, non-invasive test and needs only a short time for measurement, it is introduced not only in clinical use but in epidemiological use for investigating the subclinical effects of neurotoxic agents on the nervous system. The Japan Society for Equilibrium Research (JSER) has recommended the following standard test procedure: 1) the legs should be closed, 2) the upper limbs should be aligned on either side of the body, and 3) examinees should adopt a naturally straight posture. The standard procedure, however, does not describe how the examinees should be conscious of their posture, and mentions that no special instructions are given to them during the test. But some examinees actually ask us whether they have to stand still or stand naturally as their bodies move during the test. Because equilibrium disturbance is usually subclinical in an epidemiological study, different instructions may potentially cause measurement bias. The purpose of the present study is to determine whether the difference in instructions during the test influences the result or not.
