Racemonycin-A and -C were respectively acetylated with N-acetoxysuccinimide. The structures of these derivatives were determined by dinitrophenyl derivative method. N-Acetyl-racemomycin-A exhibited a weak antimicrobial activity and the original toxicity was decreased. N-Acetyl-racemomycin-C also had lower antimicrobial activity than the original antibiotic. These results showed that ε- and ε'-amino groups of β-lysine residue in these antibiotics are an important site for appearance of their biological activity.
