It was found that a mutyant of Alcaligenes faccalis var. myxogenes 10C3 produces a neutral polysaccharide which when heated in aqueous suspension forms a firm resilient gel. Culture conditions were examined for its production.Yeast extract was found to be the best nitrogen source and the ratio of glucose to yeast extract (1 : 0.15) added in the mdium was the most suitable for polysaccharide production.A 5% concentration of glucose gave the highest yield (48%) and the ratio of polysaccharide produced to cell protein production in this case was about 8.5.Good yields were observed with glucose, mannose, sucrose, maltose, and xylose and the yield was highest using glucose. The yield decreased progressively in accordance with the order mentioned above from glucose to maltose ranging from a high of 43% to a low of 30% when culture media contained 4% sugar and 0.6% yeast extract.
