Magnetic Properties of the (Sc_<1-x>Ti_x) Fe_2 System Having Two Magnetic States with Different Degrees of Localization

Magnetization and M6ssbauer measurements reveal that hexagonal Laves phasecompounds Sc.-.Ti,Fe.., with 0.3<.X'<0.7 have two ferromagnetic states withdifferent degrees of localization. The magnetic transition from one ferromagneticstate to the other more delocalized state takes place at -70K with increasingtemperature in Sc,..,Ti...,Fe.., with 7'.=360 K. At 500 K the magnetic state changesagain to the more localized state with a smaller effective paramagnetic moment. Theunit cell volume discontinuously decreases by - 1.1 % at - 70 K and its temperaturederivative becomes small at - 500 K with increasing temperature. The results wereanalyzed with universal expressions derived from the spin fluctuation theory byMoriya for the magnetic susceptibility and the average of the squared local amplitudeof spin fluctuation. The temperature variation of the mean square local amplitude ofspin fluctuation explains consistently the temperature dependence of spontaneousvolume magnetostriction and the susceptibility of Sc...,Ti..,Fe.., up to - 700 K.
