Magnetic Properties of Tb-Sm Single Crystals

Measurements of the magnetization and the magnetic susceptibility have beenmade along the principal axes of 'Fb-Sm single crystals. The alloys exhibit aferromagnetic structure at low temperatures in the composition region up to50at% Sm and screw-antiferromagnetism appears in the sequence c>f increaseof temperature in the compositions less than about 10at% Sm. In Sm-richalloys, the magnetic structure is presumably a Sm-type which has twc>magnetictransition temperatures T.. and T.... The temperature difference between T..and T.. decreases with decreasing Sm concentration. The magnetc?crystal1ineanisotropy constants K? and K2"" were deternained from the analyses of themagnetization curves at 4.2 K and anisotropic paramagnetic Curie te?mperature,respectively.
