Magnetostriction and Magnetic Anisotropy of Ni and Ni-Pd Alloys

Magnetostriction constants of Ni-Pd alloys containing ONTO at '3 Pd weremeasured above 77 K with the (001) and (011) disks bv means of a strain :auuetechnique. The higher order magnetostriction constants h3?h, were found to benegligibly small in comparison with the lower order constants h. and h.. Thevalues of h. and It. at 0 K determined by the extrapolation increase in magnitudewith an increase of the Pd concentration, and reach the maximum of about3.4 x 10 ' and - 1.6 x 10 ' for h. and h., respectively, around 70 at % Pd. At0 K, the contribution of the magnetoelastic term (A.)..... to the effective magneticanisotropy constant K. was found to be negligibly small, so that it is possible toregard K. as the intrinsic magnetic anisotropy constant (K.).. The concentrationdependence of h. and h., and of (K.). is qualitatively discussed.
