Magnetocrystalline Anisotropy of Co and Co-Ni Alloys

The magnetocrystalline anisotropy constants K.? and A.2 of Co-Xi alloyscontaining Ni up to 30 '3 were measured at temperatures between 77 K and 700 Kby means of a torque magnetometer. For the alloys containing Ni less thanabout 7'%, the sign of K.. was found to change f'rom positive to negative in theh.c.p. phase. The temperature at which K.. beconnes zero was found to increasefrom 510 K for Co to 620 K for 5 '3Ni-Co alloy. The temperature dependencesof K.. and K.. are discussed on the basis of the theory developed by Zener andCarr. It is clarified that the temperature dependences of K.. and K.. cannot beexplained by the power law of the reduced magrxetization. 'the contributions ofthe magnetoelastic coupling energy to K.3 and K.. are discussed. The obtainedvalue of AK.. for Co is one-tenth or one-hundredth as small as the value of K...
