Magnetostriction Constants of Nickel-Cobalt Alloys

The mannetostriction constants, 2uoo and 2111, of f.c.c. Ni -Co allovs havebeen rneasured 111 the temperature I"3118C between 77 and 450 K llS1Og the straingauge technique. The sign of 2.(,q changes from negative to positive with increas-ing Co content in the temperature range between 77 and 450 K, while the valuesof 2, . . are negative. The magnitude of both constants decreases monotonicallywith increasing temperature. The present data were analyzed by Neel's theoryand the coefficient of pseudo-dipole interaction was estimated. The temperaturedependence or t?e magnetoelastic coupling constants does not obey the thirdpower law of the reduced magnetization. The contribution of the magnetoelasticcoupling effect to the anisotropy constant, K, were evaluated, The contributionis too small to explain the change of sign in K. with increasing temperature and/orCo concentration.
