The longitudinal Kerr rotation and Kerr ellipticity, and the refractive index and extinction coefficient were measured for evaporated Ni-Fe films over the entire range of composition in the alloy system. The magneto-optic parameter Q = Q_0 exp(-iq) was discussed. Q_0 was found to be proportional to saturation magnetization M_S in both the f.c.c. and b.c.c. structure composition ranges. For the f.c.c. region (100%Ni to 50%Ni) Q_0 = 1.6 × 10^<-5> M_S, while for the b.c.c. phase (pure Fe to around 30%Ni-Fe) Q_0 = 1.2 × 10^<-5> M_S. The proportional constant for the b.c.c. phase was smaller by about 25% than that for the f.c.c. phase. This result cannot be explained within the framework of the classical theory considering the motion of conduction electrons in the internal magnetic field. It is suggested that the longitudinal Kerr effect might be closely related with the electrons responsible for the spontaneous magnetization.
