Excitonic Insulator in One Dimension

A model of one-dimensional excitonic insulator is exactly solved at zero temperature. The wave function, chemical potentials and the critical value of the energy gap at which excitonic instability occurs are obtained. This critical energy gap is equal to the binding energy of an electron-hole pair. It is shown that the ground state is insulating irrespective of the sign of the energy gap.
