Temperature Dependence of Young's Modulus in Single Crystals of a Pd-50%Au Alloy "Pallagold"

Single crystals of Pd-50% (35.1 at.%)Au alloy about 2 mm in diameter and 7〜10 cm in length were prepared, and the thermal expansion and Young's modulus were measured over the temperature range of -150°〜600℃ with the dilatometer and by means of the vibrator-controlled oscillator system, respectively. From these measured values, the Young's moduli in the three principal directions were calculated, the results at 20℃ being 5.76×10^5, 11.80×10^5 and 18.10×10^5 kg/cm^2 in the <100>, <110> and <111> directions, respectively. In the <100> direction, it increases with increasing temperature, attains a maximum at about 400℃ and then gradually decreases, while in the <110> and <111> directions, it decreases monotonously. The Young's modulus for a polycrystal was also calculated, which agreed fairly well with the measured value of the quasi-isotropic polycrystalline specimen prepared by melting.
