Based on the rule concerning invar, previously proposed by one of the writers, measurements on the thermal expansion of binary alloys of iron and platinum were carried out, and It was found that the alloys containing 52.5〜53.5 per cent of platinum have, at the vicinity of room temperature, negative coefficients of expansion and that the smallest value of the mean linear coefficient of expansion is -12.5×10^<-6> for the alloy of 53 per cent of platinum in the range of temperature 0〜40°.
