The extreme ultraviolet absorption spectra of K, Rb, and Cs show spikes atthe thresholds of oulernaost-;-shell absorption. With inclusion of the data on Nareported by Haensel et al., it is concluded that the occurrence of a spike at theedge of the absorption spectruna of outeramtost-;-slaell electrons is a con'rmoncharacteristic of alkali naetals. In Rb and Cs no definite spike is found at theonset of the high-energy-conaponent-absorption, Z,.1, produced by the spin-orbitsplitting of the levels of core holes. The sharpness of the spike decreases in theorder of Na, K, Rb, and Cs. The threshold exponent a, for the transition to the.s'-synmaetric state, obtained by neglecting the contribution from tlte transitionto the d-symnaetric state, decreases as the electron gas parameter, t', increases incontrast with the prediction from the electron gas theory.
