Extreme Ultraviolet Photoemission of CeB_6 and PrB_6

Photoelectron spectra of CeB. and PrB, have been measured over the excitation-energy range from 30 to 140 eV. From the locations of the peaks which grow resonantlyupon excitation in the giant absorption bands above the 4d thresholds of rare earths,the binding energies of 4f electrons in resonance are found to be 2.5 eV in CeB. and4.7 eV in PrB,. The shapes of energy distribution curves o bserved by excitation belowresonance agree with the reported energy distribution curve ol' LaB, and with thedensity-of-states curve calculated on LaB, by the Xc<-APW method. A sharp peak isresolved at the Fermi edge of CeB.. Its origin is discussed in relation to valencefluctuation.
