The relaxation process to the self-trapped excitons (STE) at the lowest triplet state(STE.) and the formation process of the (F -F-,#] center pairs have been investigatedby the picosecond laser photolysis and nanosecond electron-beam radiolysis between80 K and 296 K. Below ?95 K, main products are STE.. Then, the formation time ofSTE. is 20'f 10 ps. Between ?95 K and X 140 K, STE at STE. are mainly produced, and F centers are slightly produced simultaneously. F centers grow also with a slowformation time corresponding to the lifetime r'. of STE.. The typical slow formationtime is 95 f 10 ns at 128 K. Above N 140 K, STE. and F centers are still produced withformation time of 20f 10 ps. However, the initial yield for STE. is reduced, whilethat for F centers increase, with increasing the temperature. Possible branchingpathways from higher excited states (STE.) into STE. and the (F -l-#] center pair arediscussed.
