Immunohistochemical Demonstration of S-100 Protein in the Chick Non-Nervous Tissues : Morphology

Distribution of S-100 protein in the chick non-nervous tissues was investigated by immunohistochemical method using anti-bovine S-100 protein serum. S-100 protein immunoreactivity was detected in stellate cells of the pituitary gland , insulin cells and somatostatin cells of the pancreatic islet, epithelial cells of the proventriculus, and epithelial cells of the distal and the collecting tubules in the kidney. The Sertoli cells and oocytes also contained S-100 protein. These findings indicate that the occurrence and distribution of S-100 protein immunoreactive cells of the chick is less numerous than that of mammals.
