Relaxation of 2p Excitons and F Center Formation in Picosecond Range in RbBr, RbI and KBr

Formation times of F centers (7.) and self-trapped excitons (r ..E ) in RbBrcrystals have been measured under the excitation by two photon absorption ofsecond harmonics from a mode-locked ruby laser. Such excitation produces the2p hot exciton directly in the crystal. r. is 27 f8 ps at RT and 30.58 ps at LHeT.r5.. is not explicitly observed, but appears to be around 30 ps. Absorptionspectra measured at about 100 ps after the excitation coincide to that of theconventional F band at RT, and consist mainly of the F band and of a smallcontribution of the self-trapped excitons at LIIeT. r. at RT and o... at LHeT inRbl are both 30,gl0 ps. Possibly r. in KBr at RT was 20fl0 ps, but the absorp-tion decayed with a time constant of 80Of200 ps. The relaxation process ofthe 2p hot exciton in RbBr is discussed in connection with the formation ofself-trapped excitons and F centers.
