Rare-Earth N_<4,5> Absorption Spectra of Some Rare-Earth Compounds

The rare-earth ,V.., absorption spectra of rare-earth compoutads RCI, (R=La, Ce,Sm, Eu and Gd) and RB5 (R=La and Sm) were measured to obtain the informationon the excited state 4d'4f"' of these substances, where n equals the number of the 4felectrons in the ground state. The structures of the absorption spectra are well ex-plained by the multiplet states of the 4d'4f"' configuration in the final state. The SmV.., absorption spectrum of SmB. shows no distinct indicationt due to the Sm" Tonregardless of the valence mixing between the Sm" and Sm" ions. The absorptionstructure corresponding to the Sm" ion may be smeared owing to the autoionizationprocess of the excited state 4d'4f' of the Sm" ion Irecause this state is located abovethe 4d ionization threshold of the Sm" ion.
