Radiative Decay of Sm 4d-Hole States in Mixed-Valence SmB_6

The Sot .V4,5 soft X-ray emission spectrtum of naixed-valence S111B6 was rneasured to investigatethe radiative decay of Sm 4d-hole states. For cornparison, Srn 7V4,5 absorption spectrum of' SrnB(,and Sm N.j,5 emission spectrtum of Srn metal were rneasured. It is found that the emissionspectrum of SrnB5 is rnainly composed of two types of 4f + 4d emission processes derived fromSm", 4d'4f' + 4d"4f' -F hv and 4d'4.f' -* 4d"if' -l- hv'. The detailed cornparisons betweenthese spectra and existent resonant photoernission spectra reveal the indications of radiativedecay derived from Sm". In the ,lV4,5 region, no apprecialvle difference was found betweenprobabilities of radiative decay of Srn and Srn"34
