Single Pion Production in Low Energy Pion-Nucleon Scattering and Chiral Dynamics

Single pion production in low energy πN scattering is discussed by means of partially chiral invariant Lagrangian of pion, nucleon and Δ_<33> isobar system. The theory gives good fits for the experimental data in the reaction π^-p→π^+π^-n below the Δ_<33> threshold. The enhancement for the large π^+π^- invariant mass value is reproduced fairly well. Furthermore, when use is made of the value of the coupling constant of π^4 interaction determined from the reaction π^-p→π^+π^-n, it is shown that good fits are also obtained for the phase shifts of ππ scattering in the S-wave I=0 and S-wave I=2 states up to 700 MeV in ππ system. The energy dependence of the phase shift is deduced from the peculiar term of chiral dynamics. Our results as a whole suggest that chiral dynamics describes some aspects of hadron dynamics even in a relatively high energy region.
