Large Intermediate Scales and High Discrete Symmetries in Superstring Theories : Particles and Fields

It is pointed out that a special solution of the Calabi-Yau manifold with a high discrete symmetry is preferable in both contexts of consistent compactification and of realistic phenomenological implications. By virtue of the high discrete symmetry the special Calabi-Yau compactification leads to an effective four-dimensional theory with a large intermediate scale M_I≳10^<16> GeV. It is emphasized that this theory with the large M_I is consistent with the longevity of protons. It is also found that there are six types of realistic gauge hierarchies with the large M_I.
