• The reduction of ethyl 2-allyl-3-oxobutanoate mediated by <I>Mucor javanicus</I> affords the corresponding (2<I>R</I>,3<I>S</I>)-<I>syn</I>-hydroxy ester. The stereoselectivity is excellent and complementary to the reduction mediated by bakers′ yeast where the (2<I>S</I>,3<I>S</I>)-<I>anti</I>-hydroxy ester is obtained.
