The alterations of liver sinusoidal endothelial fenestration in experimental alcoholic fatty liver.

The alterations of sinusoidal endothelial fenestration (SEF) were analysed morphometrically in rat liver fed liquid diets containing 5% ethanol and in rat liver after abstinence. In control rats, the diameter of SEF in zone 1 was significantly (p<0.001) larger than that in zone 3 and the number in zone 3 was significantly (p<0.001) more compared with zone 1. The porosity of SEF was significantly (p<0.01) higher in zone 3 than in zone 1. By chronic ethanol consumption the diameter of SEF in zone 3 were enlarged significantly (p<0.001) compared with the controls. The number of SEF resulted in significant decrease in zone 1 (p<0.05) and zone 3 (p<0.01) and the porosity led to significant increase in zone 1 (p<0.05) and zone 3 (p<0.001). The differences were more remarkable in zone 3 than in zone 1. After withdrawal there was a significant difference (p<0.05) in the diameter of zone 3 compared with the controls. The alterations of SEF in ethanol fed rats might be adaptive for the liver, which may lead to fat deposition in the hepatocyte.
