Pharmacological Properties of hovenosides (HS), a saponin fraction from Hovenia dulcis, were studied by a blind screening method comprising 3 tests. Neuroleptic, myorelaxant, papaverine-like activities thereof were discussed. Neuroleptic activity of HS shown by various tests in smaller doses of 30 mg/kg i.p., which did not produce undesirable effects such as motor incoordination, muscle relaxation, hypothermia and antidiuresis. HS also enhanced the intestinal motility.
