Pharmacological properties of Phytolacca radix collected in Chinese medicine of Japan and Korea, especially as diuretics and antiinflammatory agent, were discussed on the bases of the results of in vivo experiments using phytolaccasaponin E (PS-E), one of the main saponins in phytolacca radix. PS-E which is weak hemolytic, showed an antiinflammatory, antidiuretic and weak sedative activities, and inhibited the intestinal motility.
