Four biflavonoids, isoginkgetin (I), tri-O-methylamentoflavone (II), sciadopitysin (III), and 4', 4''', 7, 7''-tetramethylamentoflavone(IV) and astragalin (kaempferol 3-gluco-side) (V) were isolated from the fresh sporophyll of Osmunda japonica THUNBERG. (Osmundaceae). This is a unique example of occurrence of biflavonoids in ferns showing a marked difference in the secondary metabolism of the fern trophophyll and sporophyll.
