Study on Sitting Postures (2) : Psychophysiological approach on the sitting postures

The basic study on sitting postures was carried out in the laboratory. On Seiza and Agura which are the Japanese specific sitting postures, Chair-sitting (on easy chair) of the general postures and Hankafuza which is one of Zen postures, the experiment was done with both of physiological and psychological approaches. Six male subjects were not Zen monks but students and graduate students who had knowledge on Zen postures. On the physiological approach, the measurements by EEG (electroencephalogram) and EMG (electromyogram) were carried out on each postures. The results show that Alpha wave and peak frequency in Seiza are higher than those in Hankafuza on EEG, and that muscular activities on Agura and Chair-sitting are weaker than the ones of on Seiza and Hankafuza. On the psychological approach, the results of the rating scale on each sitting posture were sorted out and the profiles were made. As the results of the study, these postures are categorized into two images, one is "hard" image (Seiza and Hankafuza) in which the consciousness of the person goes into the inside of himself and his attention is concentrated, and the others is "soft" image (Agura and Chair-sitting) in which his consciousness extends outside and his attention is dispersed.
