Chlorine-Kβ X-Ray Emission Spectra from 3d Transition-Metal Chlorides

The chlorine-Kβ emission spectra in fluorescence from CuCl, CuCl_2, ZnCl_2, CrCl_3・6H_2O (dark green), FeCl_3・6H_2O (brownish yellow) and trans-[CoCl_2(NH_3)_4]Cl are measured with a high-resolution two-crystal vacuum spectrometer and are presented along with the chlorine-K absorption-edge spectra of these compounds. The emission spectra of CuCl, CuCl_2 and ZnCl_2 are quite different from one another. Those of CrCl_3・6H_2O and FeCl_3・6H_2O consist of a broad band in contrast to the line-shaped spectrum of trans-[CoCl_2(NH_3)_4]Cl. The emission and absorption-edge spectra provide information on the electronic structure in the valence and conduction bands of these compounds.
