X-Ray Spectroscopic Investigation of the Valence-Band Structure of Layered Compounds MPS_3(M=Mn,Fe,Ni,Zn,Mg)

The P K /3 emission and S K f3 etnission spectra in fluorescence from the layered counpotrndsA#PS3 (W : Mn, Fe, Ni, Zn, 1VIg) have been rneasured with a high-resolution two-crystalvacuuna spectrouneter eqtripped with Ge(111) crystals. The measured emission spectra are mainlydetermined by the [P2S6]' cluster. The P Kf3 enaission and S Kf3 ernission spectra of ZnPS3,NiPS3 and FePS3 are compared with available XPS valence-band spectra and theoretical bandstructtxres on a common energy scale and their valence-band structtrres are investigated. It isshown that the P 3p and S 3p states in their valence bands lie very close to each other and therespective 3p states are alike in the WPS3 compounds.
