Fluorine Kα X-Ray Emission Spectra from Selected Metal Fluorides

With a high-resolution two-crystal vacuum spectrometer, the fluorine Kα emission spectra in fluorescence are measured for AlF_3, CrF_3・xH_2O, FeF_3・xH_2O, NiF_2・4H_2O, ZrF_4, NH_4NbF_6 and a series of rare-earth trifluorides RF_3 (R=La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu and Gd). The measured emission spectra consist of a prominent peak and its high-energy satellites. It is shown that the presence of the K^1L^1 satellite peak arising from the 1s^<-1>2p^<-1> initial state is unclear in LaF_3, CeF_3, PrF_3 and NdF_3, in contrast to that of other metal fluorides. This unclear presence is attributed to the F 2p shell vacancy rearrangement through interatomic electronic transitions before 1s hole filling for fluorine Kα emission. The emission spectra of LaF_3 and CeF_3 are compared with the XPS spectra of the F^- 2p valence bands obtained by Sato. There is a good agreement between them.
