X-Ray Spectroscopic Investigation of Valence Bands of PdCl_2, Pd(ac)_2 and Pd(acac)_2

The palladium-Lβ_<2,15> emission and chlorine-Kβ emission spectra in fluorescence from PdCl_2, Pd(OCOCH_3)_2 (=Pd(ac)_2) and Pd(CH_3COCHCOCH_3)_2 (=Pd(acac)_2) are measured using a high-resolution two-crystal spectrometer. The Pd Lβ_<2,15> emission and Cl Kβ emission spectra are presented along with the Pd L_<III> absorption and Cl K absorption spectra of these compounds reported previously. The measured Pd β_<2,15> emission spectra consist of a prominent peak with a high-energy structure and are quite alike, in contrast to the case of the Pd L_<III> absorption spectra. The emission and absorption spectra of PdCl_2 are compared with those of K_2PdCl_4 reported previously and interpreted in terms of the D_<2h> molecular orbital states of the d^8 metal ion for PdCl_2 by Tanino and Kobayashi.
