Multiplet Structures in the L_<2,3> Absorption Spectra of 3d Transition-Metal Fluorides

The L.,. absorption spectra of 3d transition-metal in CrF., MnF., FeF.,Coax, NiFz and ZI1F2 have been measured with a newly designed 10m grazingincidence monochromator. The L.,3 (2p -+3d) "white lines" have been observedin the spectra of CrF3, MnF., FeF., CoFz and NiFz. On the contrary, ZnF.does not exhibit sharp white lines, but only weak peaks. This is ascribed to theabsence Of OTI empty 3d level. FIIIC structures Of the L2,3 Wh1tC JIOCS 318 unterpretedas the multir>let srlittinu due to the interaction between a metal 2r>hole andlocalized unraired 3d electrons. Observed sr>ectra are comrared with the sr>ectratheoretically calculated by Gupta and Sen and also by Yamaguchi et at.
