Donor-Acceptor Pair and Self-Activated Luminescence in Al-Doped Cd_<1-x>Mg_xTe Crystals

The emission and excitation spectra of the broad emission band at 720 nm in Cd_1-xMg_xTe(x=0.45) with different doping levels of Al (0.01 and 0.1 at.%) have been measured over the temperature range of 200〜4.2 K. The excitation spectrum has a characteristic peak at 570nm on the low energy side of the absorption edge of this crystal. An emphasis is placed on the discussion of the recombination process when the crystals are excited at 365 and 570 nm.A difference is observed between the lightly and heavily doped crystals in various characteristics such as the decay curve, half-width, spectral shape and emission intensity of the L-band(720 nm) luminescence. It is concluded that the L-band emission arises from two different kinds of emission process; A donor-acceptor pair recombination observed dominantly in the heavily doped crystal and a self-activated center in the lightly doped crystal.
