Effect of Isothermal Annealing on Magnetic Properties of Sn_<1-x>Cr_xTe Crystals

Magnetization measurements were carried out in the temperature range 77-300 K on Sn_<1-x>Cr_x Te crystals grown by the Bridgeman method (degenerate near-ferromagnetic semiconductors). Isothermal annealing in Zn vapor (at 600℃, followed by quehching in water) was found to be effective in reducing Sn vacancies and lattice strains;e.g., the Curie temperature and the coercive force for a sample with x=0.5 at.% varied from 160 K to 300 K and from 3 kOe to 600 Oe, respectively, with increasing annealing time (5 min-7 days). Heat treatment in vacuum also reduced the coercive force, but no appreciable change was observed in the Curie temperature. A qualitative discussion is presented here on these structure-sensitive properties.
