1,2-Naphthoquinone-2-semicarbazone (IV), 1,2-naphthoquinone-2-thiosemicarbazone (V), and their derivatives having sulfonic acid group in 4-position, potassium 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonate 2-semicarbazone (VI) and 2-thiosemicarbazone (VII) were prepared. Among them, VI and VII have not been found in any literature, and the position of semicarbazone or thiosemicarbazone moiety condensed on naphthalene ring was determined from their nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. Coloration reaction of these compounds with various metal ions was examined. VII showed specific coloration with copper in acidic condition, and its application as a reagent for spectrophotometric determination of copper was investigated. Determination of copper by VII was found to be possible within the range of 4.0 to 40 μg/2 ml by the measurement of absorbance at 555 nm. As the color reaction is specific for copper, VII is considered to be a useful analytical reagent.
