Microbial Degradation of Cyclopentanecarboxylic Acid by Corynebacterium sp.

A bacterium utilizing cyclopentanecarboxylic acid (C_5CA) as a sole carbon souece, strain KUC-5A, was isolated from soil and classified as the genus Corynebacterium. Strain KUG-5A was grown on a synthetic medium containing C_5CA, 5 ml; (NH_4)_2HPO_4,1.5 g; Na_2HPO_4,1.5 g; KH_2PO_4,1.5 g; MgSO_4・7H_2O, 0.2 g; CaCl_2・2H_2O, 0.01 g;FeSO_4・7H_2O, 5 mg;MnSO_4H_2O, 2 mg;and yeast extract, 0.1 g, in 1 l of distilled water. The pH was adjusted to 8.0.The Qo_3 value was 120 μl/mg dry cell/hr. It was suggested that C_5CA is metabolized via 2-oxo-C_5CA and adipic acid, because these acids accumulated in the culture medium with C_5CA as the sole carbon source. Strain KUC-5A could also utilize cyclohexanecarboxylic acid among the cyclic acids.
