A pentaerythritol-utilizing bacterium was isolated from soil by enrichment cultures. Taxonomical stueies showed that strain KUP-1 was a member of the genus Corynebacterium. Strain KUP-1 was grown on a medium containing (NH_4)_2HPO_4,0.5 g; Na_2HPO_4,1.0 g; KH_2PO_4,1.0 g; MgSO_4・7H_2O, 0.2 g; CaCl_2・2H_2O, 0.02 g; FeCl_3・6H_2O, 0.05 g; yeast extract, 0.05 g and pentaerythritol, 5.0 g, in one liter of distilled water; the pH was sdjusted to 7.4. The bacterium could utilize lactose, galactose, inositol, 1-butanol, pentaerythritol, tris-(hydroxymethyl) acetic acid, malic acid and α-ketoglutatic acid as carbon sources. Strain KUP-1 produced polysaccharide from pentaerythritol. The polysaccharide was comprised of glucose, rhamnose and arabinose as neutral sugars, in an approximate molar ration of 2 : 1 : 1.
