Ultrasonic Study of Ferroelectric (NH_4)_2BeF_4 under Hydrostatic High Pressure

Ultrasonic velocites have been determined on the ferroelectric (NH.).BeF. asfunctions of both temperattu'e and pressure. Special attention has been paid tothe incommensurate phase which appears in a narrow temperature range. Thetemperature dependence of sound velocities corresponding to the elastic constantsc.., c.., c.., c.., c .5 , c55 has been obtained at several constant pressures. A distinctpressure dependence was observed in the variation of the cz. component with tem-perature.The ultrasonic attenuation of the longitudinal sound propagated along theo-axis has been measured under pressure. From the result of the attenuationmeasurement and the Brillouin scattering data, it was found that the relaxationtime in the normal phase is given by r...=r./((7' -'T.)/T.) "' at atmosphericpressure. The elementary relaxation time r. is determined to be (1.1 fO.3) x 10 "sec.
