Study of Hypersound Attenuation and Dispersion in NH_4Cl by the use of Back and Forward Brillouin Scattering

Attenuation and dispersion of the longitudinal phonons of the [1004 pro-pagation in NH.C[ were investigated by the Brillouin scattering of the backscattering geometry (x33 GHz) and by that of the nearly forward (?=8') scat-tering (x2.3 GHz). The velocity obtained from the back scattering shows atemperature dependence almost the same as that from the right angle scattering.The velocity at 2.3 GHz shows an intermediate behavior between those of theultrasonic measurements and of the back Brillouin scattering. The temperaturedependence of the phonon decay rate shows behavior different from that pre-dicted by the classical theory of sound attenuation and dispersion due to relaxa-tion. The increase in the velocity in the ordered phase was interpreted by thecompressibJe Ising model proposed by Garland and Renard.
