Rayleigh-Brillouin Scattering in NH_4Cl under Hydrostatic Pressure

Ha>'leinh-Brillouin scatterins in NH4C1 has been studied under hydrostaticr>ressure. Brillouin shifts of the Ionuitudinal r>honons r>ror>axatin: along the<100>and<110>directions and of the transverse rhonons rror>asatinx alonxthe<110>direction are measured as a function of temr>erature at four fixedrressures ur:>to 2.3 kbar. All comnonezats increase almost linearlv with decreasingtemrerature in the disordered r:>hase and show incremental increases similar tothe temperature dependence of the long range order parameter in the orderedr>hase. It was found that the lonsitudinal modes exhibit larne desr>ersion effecteven at high pressures. On the other hand, the transverse mode appears to give nodisrersion effect. The intensit>r of the Ra>'leinh component in the vv polarization?- condition increases as the temperature approaches the transition point, while thatin the VH polarization does not show such anomalous increase.
