^1A_<1g> to ^3B_<1g> Conversion at the Onest of Superconductivity in La_<2-x>Sr_xCuO_4 Due to the Apical Oxygen Effect

By the first-principles variational calculations we show that, with the increase of Srconcentration, the ground state of Cub. octahedron in La. .3>r..Cu0. changes fromA., to 'B, near the observed onset concentration of superconductivity while theground state of the Cub. cluster in Nd. .Ce..Cu0. is always 'B, in the presence of do-pant electrons. Based on this result, two kinds of phase diagrams are predicted forhole- and electron-doped supc:rconductors. These results support the spin polaronmechantsm proposed by Kamimura et ctl.thigh temperature superconductivity, Va. .Sr.CuO., Ncl. .Ce.CuO., spin ll polaron, cluster simulation, MCSCF methodl
