On the Magnetic Moment and g-Value of Complex Ions

• Magnetic properties of complex salts containing paramagnetic ions of transition elements are studied on the crystalline field model. Strong cubic crystalline field splits d-orbital into dγ and dε, and the magnetism is due to incomplete dε shells. The crystalline field is assumed to have, besides cubic part, a component of tetragonal or trigonal symmetry, comparable in magnitude with spin-orbit interaction. Energy level structures, g-values of the ground state and magnetic susceptibilities are calculated for (dε)^n configurations 1≦n≦5. The effective numbers of Bohr magnetons, which measure the magnetic susceptibility, are obtained as explicit functions of two parameters x=<r^2>^^^→A/7kT and y=λ/2kT, where A is the coefficient of tetragonal or trigonal field, and λ the constant of spin-orbit coupling. The result is applied to the discussion of magnetic properties of K_3Fe(CN)_6 and K_3Mn(CN)_6. In Appendix, it is shown that the result for the field of trigonal symmetry becomes equivalent to that for the field of tetragonal symmetry.
