We have previously reported that low-energy laser irradiation stimulated bome formatioun. However the mechanism of biostimulatory effect on bone formation is unclear. Since IGF-I is known to stimulate bone formation, we examined whether stimtulatory effect of laser irradiationon bone nodule formation is mediated by IGF-I expression. Calvarial osteoblasts were cultured with IGF-I-Ab and irradiated with a low-energy laser. Stimulation of bone nodule formation by laser was inhibited dose-dependently with application of IGF-I-Ab. Laser irradiatiotr also significantly stimulated IGF-I protein and gene expression. These results indicate that stimulation of bone nodule formation by laser may be partly mediated by IGF-I expression.
