In order to evaluate the interaction of taurine with the kallikrein-kinin and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone systems, we measured daily urinary taurine excretion, kallikrein excretion, plasma renin activity and plasma aldosterone in 8 essential hypertensives with normal diet (10 g of sodium chloride for 7 days), low sodium diet (3 g of sodium chloride for 5 days and oral administration of furosemide 120 mg/day on the first day) and high sodium diet (20 g of sodium chloride for 7 days). During sodium depletion, plasma renin activity, plasma aldosterone, and daily urinary taurine excretion were significantly increased compared with those in the normal sodium diet. During the high sodium intake, these values were significantly decrcased compared with those in the low sodium diet. Urinary kallikrein excretion showed a similar pattern to taurine excretion with the low sodium diet. On the other hand, when taurine 6 g/day was orally administered in 7 essential hypertensives, the plasma renin activity and plasma aldosterone did not change significantly even under the low sodium diet. These findings suggest that taurine may inhibit the activation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system duringthe low sodium diet in essential hypertension.
